Diabo com guitarra 30cm - Prazeres Côta

This statuette depicts a flamboyant red, three-horned Devil musician, filled with all the exuberance of Minho folk art. His wide eyes, dramatically arched eyebrows and prominent ears create a face that is as expressive as it is unpredictable.

His half-open mouth reveals several irregular teeth, including a single yellow tooth that heightens his grotesque, mischievous appearance. Adorned with a blue and gold bow, he holds a richly decorated yellow guitar against his body, as though he were about to set the rhythm for a devilishly lively celebration. Through the free-spirited and playful vision of Prazeres Côta, the Diabo becomes a joyful, theatrical and profoundly singular figure, poised between belief, satire and the Portuguese popular imagination.

The Côta family is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic and charismatic representatives of the figurative art of Barcelos and the Minho region in northern Portugal.

Today, Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, passionately continues the family tradition begun by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côto da Rocha, creator of the legendary Galo de Barcelos, now one of Portugal’s best-known symbols.

Prazeres first came to wider public attention at the Feira de Barcelos in 2018, where she received the Newcomer of the Year award. She is now recognised as a rising figure in Portuguese folk art. The Pottery Museum celebrates her work through the exhibition "Geração Côta", which brings together several of her pieces from her own collection and from private collections.
