The legend of the Barcelos Rooster

Barcelos is a small town in northern Portugal. Several crimes were committed there and no culprit was arrested until a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela was found guilty by the court.
He proclaimed his innocence and went to the judge. Seeing a rooster in a basket near him, the accused said: "It's as true that I am innocent as it is that your rooster will stand up and sing at the moment I am hanged!".
The rooster sang and the judge ran to where the man had been hanged. He found that due to the knot not being properly tied, the man was alive. He was thus deemed innocent and released.
