"Boneca com Présépio" literally translates to "Doll with Nativity Scene." This figurine primarily depicts life in rural Minho with primary-colored and shimmering clothes, and feminine ornaments such as the hat and earrings. It also evokes the Nativity with the traditional figures surrounding Jesus' birth hidden under the Boneca's skirts.

It is the most authentic expression of Julia Côta's personal and creative universe, as she naively molds clay, representing what she sees around her.

Júlia Côta is today one of the greatest living ambassadors of the "Figurado de Barcelos", an emblematic artistic movement of Portuguese popular art.

Granddaughter of João Domingos Côta da Rocha – considered the father of the famous "Galo de Barcelos" (Rooster of Barcelos), she was introduced to the art of clay modeling at the age of 9, a skill she has never stopped perfecting.

At nearly 90 years old, Júlia has become a true legend. Honored during her appearances, she is regularly visited in her small house in Barcelos, now located on a street proudly bearing her name, by artists from all over the world who come to meet her as one would visit an icon.

Her works, both naive, expressive, and deeply human, are now part of private collections, are exhibited in galleries worldwide, and are the subject of exhibitions and retrospectives. But despite this international recognition, Júlia has remained true to herself: simple, generous, touched by every mark of attention... and always with her hands in the clay.

She continues, with tenderness and humility, to pass on her art to her daughter Prazeres, thus perpetuating a unique family tradition.
