With its red comb, white and blue plumage and small wooden base featuring a colour scale, the Galo do Tempo retains all the cheerful, retro charm that made it so popular in the 1960s. A typically Portuguese object, somewhere between a childhood memory, a scientific curiosity and a decorative piece.

Its changing colours come from a humidity-sensitive coating that naturally reacts to variations in the surrounding air. It is certainly no substitute for a weather station, but that is precisely part of its charm: watching its colour change with the conditions and rediscovering an object familiar to generations of Portuguese families.

Why I love it

  • A Portuguese object with a genuine story to tell
  • Its delightfully retro character, reminiscent of Portuguese homes in the 1960s
  • Its colour changes according to the humidity in the air

More informations?

The Galo do Tempo was created in Portugal in the 1960s by José Dias Cardoso, using the silhouette of the famous Galo de Barcelos as inspiration. It subsequently became a familiar sight in Portuguese homes, particularly throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, both as a decorative object and as a simple indicator of changing weather conditions.

Part popular keepsake, part decorative object and part scientific curiosity, today it evokes a whole chapter of everyday Portuguese life from the 1960s to the 1980s.
