This statuette brings to life the Devil as he is imagined in the villages of Minho, Portugal's mystical birthplace: incandescent red, glowing with reflections and draped in ornaments like a cloak of fire.

But under the mischievous eye of Júlia Côta, this Devil moves away from the darkness to flirt with the burlesque. Here he is, sporting three horns, defying tradition with a playful smile, straight out of an imagination as fiery as it is deeply rooted.

What I like

  • An unclassifiable statuette, halfway between craftsmanship and naive art.
  • A burlesque evocation of the traditions and mythologies of rural Minho, always imbued with sensitivity and respect.
  • A very modern work once it is taken out of its environment.

  • Height: approx. 40 cm

Júlia Côta is today one of the greatest living ambassadors of "Figurado de Barcelos", an emblematic artistic movement of Portuguese folk art.

Granddaughter of João Domingos Côta da Rocha – considered the father of the famous "Galo de Barcelos" (Barcelos Rooster), she was introduced to the art of clay modeling at the age of 9, a skill she has never stopped developing.

At nearly 90 years old, Júlia has become a true legend. Welcomed with honors during her appearances, she is regularly visited in her small house in Barcelos, now located on a street proudly bearing her name, by artists from all over the world who come to meet her as one would visit an icon.

Her works, at once naive, expressive, and deeply human, are now part of private collections, exhibited in galleries worldwide, and are the subject of exhibitions and retrospectives. But despite this international recognition, Júlia has remained true to herself: simple, generous, touched by every mark of attention… and always with her hands in the clay.

She continues, with tenderness and humility, to transmit her art to her daughter Prazeres, thus perpetuating a unique family tradition.
