These bags are made by the old artisans of Castanheira Alcobaça village, brought together by Nuno Barreiro, a son of the village. A beautiful, authentic story!
The rush grows wild in the region, no fertilizer, no pesticides, it just takes some effort to harvest it.
Calibrating, drying, everything is manual and local: no transport, no chemicals, no machines...
Weaving: At this stage too, everything is local. The village artisans share a workshop and take turns to fulfill orders.
Assembly, finishing, and quality control: no bag leaves the workshop without being inspected inside and out by the elders.

- These artisans are meticulous and master their know-how. The assembly of the bag's sides, also made of rush, is a difficult operation that gives the bag its full shape. Most imitations only use canvas sides, which make the bag lose its shape over time.
