It was Bordallo Pinheiro who introduced ceramic swallows into the Portuguese popular imagination. The swallow is now an icon of national folklore and a decorative element present in all Portuguese homes.
Barcelos swallows are produced in an artisan workshop and are hand-painted in different colors.
As a decorative element, they are used both outdoors on a facade or in an entrance, and indoors on a wall.
