The Legend of the Barcelos Rooster
Barcelos is a small town in northern Portugal. Several crimes were committed there, and no culprit was arrested until one day a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela was found guilty by the court.
He claimed his innocence and, to prove it, went to the judge. Seeing a rooster in a basket near him, the accused said: "It is as true that I am innocent as it is that your rooster will stand up and crow the moment I am hanged!"
The rooster crowed, and the judge ran to where the man had been hanged. He found that due to a poorly tied knot, the man was alive. He was thus deemed innocent and set free.
