Diabo com guitarra 30cm - Prazeres Côta

This figurine brings to life a musician Devil as spectacular as he is irreverent. Blazing red and crowned with three horns — one of them sheltering a tiny demonic figure — he brandishes his yellow guitar as though leading an infernal procession through the heart of the Minho.

Yet it is his teeth that truly command attention: enormous, irregular and deliberately exaggerated, they form a grotesque, jubilant grin. Among them, a golden tooth adds to his defiant, almost swaggering character. Through the mischievous eye of Prazeres Côta, the Diabo loses all solemnity and becomes a burlesque, musical and deeply distinctive creature, poised between folk art, satire and Portugal’s ancestral imagination.

The Côta family is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic and charismatic names in the figurative folk art of Barcelos and the Minho region of northern Portugal.

Today, Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, passionately continues the family tradition begun by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côto da Rocha, creator of the legendary Galo de Barcelos, now a symbol of Portugal.

Prazeres first came to public attention at the Feira de Barcelos in 2018, where she received the Revelation of the Year award. She is now recognised as a rising figure in Portuguese folk art. The Pottery Museum celebrates her work through the exhibition “Geração Côta”, bringing together several of her creations from her own collection and private collections.
