This figurine depicts São Pedro, one of Christ’s principal apostles, traditionally associated with the keys to Heaven, the protection of fishermen and the foundation of the Church. It embodies the deeply personal and creative world of Prazeres Côta, who skilfully carries forward her family’s artistic heritage through her own interpretation of Saint Peter.

The works of Prazeres Côta, like those of her mother Júlia, draw inspiration from rural life in the Minho region. They evoke its emblematic figures, popular traditions and distinctive world, where religious faith blends with beliefs, legends and ancestral stories.

The Côta family is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic and charismatic representatives of the figurative art of Barcelos and the Minho region in northern Portugal.

Today, Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, passionately continues the family tradition begun by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côta da Rocha, creator of the legendary Galo de Barcelos, which has become a symbol of Portugal.

Introduced to a wider audience at the Feira de Barcelos in 2018, where she received the Revelation of the Year award, Prazeres is now recognised as a rising figure in Portuguese folk art. The Pottery Museum celebrates her work through the exhibition "Geração Côta", bringing together several of her creations from her own collection and private collections.
