This "Galo de Barcelos" is far more than a representation of Portugal’s famous rooster: it is a unique piece created by Prazeres Côta, great-granddaughter of João Domingos Côta da Rocha, who created one of the forms that became emblematic of the Galo de Barcelos.

Today, Prazeres continues this family story, spanning more than a century, with a visual language entirely her own. The bold colours, expressive silhouette and deliberately oversized crest give the rooster its unmistakable presence, yet above all, every creation bears the personality and distinctive hand of Prazeres.

The Côta family is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic and charismatic names in the figurative folk art of Barcelos and the Minho region of northern Portugal.

Today, Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, passionately continues the family tradition begun by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côto da Rocha, creator of the legendary Galo de Barcelos, now a symbol of Portugal.

Prazeres first came to wider public attention at the Feira de Barcelos in 2018, where she was named Revelation of the Year. She is now recognised as a rising figure in Portuguese folk art. The Pottery Museum has celebrated her work through the exhibition "Geração Côta", bringing together several of her pieces from her own collection and from private collections.
