Coimbra Ceramics – Hand-Painted Amphora Vase

Creating each piece requires long, precise and entirely manual work. Every amphora is shaped and then decorated by hand by an artisan painter, who is free to interpret the composition, drawing and colour nuances in their own way.

Coimbra ceramics date back to the 16th century and are produced by workshops traditionally known for their use of cobalt blue, both in monochrome decoration and alongside shades of yellow, green and ochre. This distinctive ceramic tradition, deeply rooted in the central Portuguese city of Coimbra, has been recognised internationally for centuries.
